Over the past few years, I've had a lot of Trek-related story ideas
bouncing around in my head, but I discovered that I really couldn't write
any of the series regulars (except maybe Worf and Spock) worth a damn, so
I decided to create some of my own characters.
The end result of that is what I hope will turn into a series: "Donovan's
Enterprise". The first story, "Spare Parts" is about halfway finished so
far, and I'm getting impatient, so I figured I'd start posting what I have
to get feedback. The ensuing chapters will be posted as they're finished
(hopefully, that won't take too long as I finally sat down to outline the
whole plot a few days ago).
First up is the prologue, which introduces all of the principal characters
but has no real bearing on the story. The prologue should get posted
immediately after this. I'll post Chapter One in a day or so, and
everything else as I finish them.
A few comments, both about my writing style and about some of the details
of the characters I've created, before I begin. If you're not interested,
just hit 'n'. My feelings won't be hurt. No, really, they won't. :)
-For starters, I have little or no scientific background, so don't look
for much (if any) Treknobabble in my stories. If I do wind up mangling a
scientfic concept, as I'm sure I will, feel free to point out my mistake
so I can correct it. Any other comments or criticisms are also very welcome.
-As far as my writing goes, most of my characters tend to have certain
quirks to them, and there will be a lot of banter going on back and forth
(don't expect all out comedy, though. This is a fairly serious story)
Some people might object to Sovek, the Vulcan engineer, as being too
comical, but that's kind of the point.
-On to certain things you should probably know before you start:
-This is all set about 40 years from current events on TNG and DS9.
In the interim, the Federation and Cardassia went to war, with
neither side winning. Anything else about the current political
situation will be revealed in future stories.
-Lt. Mardak is a Benzite, a race that has appeared a couple of times
before on TNG, including the episode where Wesley first took a test
to get into the Academy, and the one where Riker was first officer
on a Klingon ship. If you still can't remember them, they're the
grey-skinned, vaguely walrus-looking aliens with the big spoon-like
rebreather in front of their mouths.
-Lt. Gaia is an Orion, a race that's appeared a number of times on
TOS and in TOS books, though I've only seen one other reference to
one serving in starfleet (the second of AC Crispin's books featuring
Spock's son).
-The Maltusians (Lt. Cmdr. Daniels' race) have never appeared anywhere
before; they are my creation. Expect to see more of them in future
stories.
That's pretty much it. I'm not married to all the concepts - most notably
the idea of all the missions taking place in the Gamma Quadrant, where I
won't be able to use any previously established races - and if you have
any suggestions about future story ideas or just comments in general, I'll
be more than happy to listen.
Well, that's it. Enjoy the prologue, and expect to see Chapter One by
Thursday afternoon, if not sooner.
-I'm outta here like Vladimir!
